Welcome to French French Language and Culture !
This course is designed for students who have never studied French before. In other words, there are no prerequisites for this class, just bring your curiosity and enthusiasm, both inside and outside the classroom. Throughout the course, you will not only learn the French language, but you will learn about French and Francophone Cultures. What we will emphasize is that learning a language entails not only memorizing vocabulary and acquiring grammatical structures, but also involves discovering new culture(s), a distinct way of perceiving the world and of interacting with one another. To facilitate this learning, the course will embrace an immersive approach where I will predominantly communicate in French with you. I will incorporate cultural material such as songs, films, art, etc. into the classroom environment as much as possible and I encourage you to bring material to classes that you enjoy. Being immersed in French will help you become proficient and develop the skill of inferring meaning from context. Indeed, language extends beyond naming things and representation; it revolves around practical usage. I will also encourage you to speak French with your peers to maximize our classroom time together. My deepest wish is that you’ll find enjoyment in building and embracing your French persona.
