The students of this course will learn about the history of European integration since World War II and the historical evolution of the European project.  

The students will understand the construction of Europe as an on-going process, not a linear or a natural one but a complex process and the result of political leaders’ decisions throughout the recent decades. The process will be analyzed and understood in the general global context and taking into account external threats and economic and social dynamics.

Second, students will learn on the development of the main European institutions, their composition, and their role today: the main European institutions of the European Union political system – the European Commission; the Council of the EU; the European Parliament. In addition, a special focus will be on the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights.

Finally, this historical and institutional background knowledge will be complemented with class discussions on contemporary policy issues in Europe discussed today in these European institutions and across European countries, such as security and foreign policy, migration, climate policy, rule of law and democracy, women’s rights, etc. studying in-depth case-studies and specific European conventions, case-laws of the European Court of Human Rights and decision-making in the EU.
